Spring in the Netherlands: 7 outings that pull you outside (and why it works)

Longer days, rising temperatures: time for outings that feel like blossom, water and fresh air.

After months of dark mornings and indoor evenings, the itch begins. Clocks are set forward, the first terraces open, and cherry and plum trees bloom everywhere. Spring in the Netherlands is short but powerful — and the perfect trigger for an outing that takes you outside.

Why being outside is good for you

It is not just a feeling: outdoor activities lower cortisol levels, stimulate creativity and improve mood. Combined with company, the effect is even stronger. A shared outdoor outing literally gives you energy — and it does not have to take an entire day.

    1. Blossom walk with picnic

From the Amsterdamse Bos to Park Frankendael, from Máximapark in Utrecht to Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam: blossom parks are free, photogenic and perfect to combine with a casual picnic. Bring a blanket, thermos and something tasty. Simple but unforgettable.

    2. Cycling through the Bollenstreek

Between mid-March and mid-May the Bollenstreek is in full bloom. A bike ride from Lisse to Noordwijk (about 25 km) takes you past endless tulip fields, daffodils and hyacinths. Combine it with a stop at a local farm or a terrace in Noordwijk aan Zee.

    3. Kayaking or stand-up paddling on city canals

Utrecht, Leiden, Delft, Haarlem: once the mercury rises above 14 degrees, the canals are perfect for a trip on the water. SUP is low-barrier, kayaking slightly more sporty. Both give you a completely new perspective on a city you thought you knew.

    4. Urban gardening or pick-your-own farms

More and more locations offer pick-your-own or gardening workshops. From Pluktuinen in the Westland to urban farms in Amsterdam-Noord: hands in the soil, seasonal vegetables to take home, and the feeling that you created something together.

    5. Outdoor cinema or sunset sessions

From April the first open-air film evenings return. Venues like Pllek (Amsterdam), TivoliVredenburg terrace (Utrecht) and Dakpark (Rotterdam) combine film or music with a setting sun. Bring a blanket — it is spring, not summer.

    6. Birdwatching in the Biesbosch or Oostvaardersplassen

For those seeking calm: spring migration means rare birds return. The Biesbosch and Oostvaardersplassen are spectacular in March and April. Not a birdwatcher? Does not matter — it is about silence, nature and discovering something together that you normally miss.

    7. Surprise outing via Toudou

Not in the mood to plan? Let Toudou assemble a spring outing based on your preferences. You indicate what you enjoy, we arrange the rest — complete with a surprise until the last moment. Ideal when you want to surprise someone without the organisational stress.

    Spring checklist: keep it easy

    • Check the weather the morning itself (unpredictable = layers)
    • Book what is bookable (terraces, SUP rental)
    • Always bring an extra layer — 18 degrees in the sun feels different than in the shade
    • Start early: the best spring light is between 16:00 and 19:00

Spring in the Netherlands does not last long. Make the most of it — together. 🌸
